Openings: We are looking for motivated PhD, MS, and undergraduate students to join our group. Please visit the openings page for more information.

Howdy! Welcome to the Cardiovascular Biomechanics Laboratory at Texas Tech University! Our lab is committed to advancing the clinical prognosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease through an innovative, multidisciplinary fusion of methodologies, including computational biomechanical modeling, data-driven and physics-informed machine learning, constitutive and failure modeling, and experimental tissue testing. Collaborating closely with cardiothoracic surgeons, biomechanical engineers, and computer scientists, we are dedicated to pioneering noninvasive, personalized computational tools to enhance clinical decision-making.

06/2025 Our lab attended the ASME Summer Bioengineering Conference (SB3C) in Santa Ana Pueblo, New Mexico. Yuhang, Zhuofan, and Zhongxi presented one oral talk and two posters on aortic growth prognosis in type B aortic dissection, statistical shape modeling of type B aortic dissection, and computational modeling of thoracic endovascular aortic repair. Dr. Liu also co-chaired a Vascular Mechanics session. We enjoyed reconnecting with old friends and making new connections.

01/2025 We are excited to welcome our new Ph.D. student, Bangquan Liao. He holds a master's degree from the University of Pittsburgh.

12/2024 Our new paper, "Predicting Biaxial Failure Strengths of Aortic Tissues Using a Dispersed Fiber Failure Model," has been accepted in Extreme Mechanics Letters.

08/2024 We are pleased to welcome Zhuofan Li, our new Ph.D. student. Zhuofan graduated with a bachelor's degree from Nanjing University in China.

08/2024 Excited to share that our lab has received an NSF award from the Foundations for Digital Twins as Catalyzers of Biomedical Technological Innovation (FDT-BioTech) program. This is a collaborative project with Dr. Liang Liang at University of Miami. More details can be found here.

04/2024 Congratulations to Dr. Liu for receiving the Career Development Award from the American Heart Association.

02/2024 Please check out our new paper titled “The role of anatomic shape features in the prognosis of uncomplicated type B aortic dissection initially treated with optimal medical therapy” published in Computers in Biology and Medicine.

01/2024 Our lab welcomes Zhongxi Zhou, a new Ph.D. student, to join our group. Zhongxi is co-advised by Dr. Zhaoming He.

09/2023 We welcome our first Ph.D. student, Yuhang Du, to join our group. Yuhang holds a bachelor's degree from Southwest Jiaotong University in China.

09/2023 Our Collaborative work titled “Synergistic Integration of Deep Neural Networks and Finite Element Method with Applications of Nonlinear Large Deformation Biomechanics” is published in Computer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering. We proposed a brand-new integrative strategy with deep learning to boost the performance of FEA.

08/2023 The Cardiovascular Biomechanics Lab has been established within the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Texas Tech University, located in Lubbock, TX.
